With the increased focus on health and wellbeing, beauty and personal care consumers are expecting more transparency in product labeling. In fact, Ingredion proprietary consumer research in 11 countries reveals that, after price, ingredients are the most important criteria when selecting skin care products in most of the surveyed countries.1
Talc is one ingredient drawing special attention. It has been used in personal care for centuries, from makeup to skin care to baby products. But more recently, talc-based products have been under consumer scrutiny for potential safety concerns. In our survey, talc was one of the ingredients that consumers were indeed familiar with — but wanted to avoid in their skin care.1
As researchers continue to study and address some of the concerns about talc, global launches of talc-based products have decreased by more than 50% from 2016 to 2019,2 according to Innova, underscoring the rising consumer preference for products containing plant-based talc alternatives such as corn, rice and tapioca starches.
