Mar 5: The Elements of Healthy Skin

Dr. Matsui will provide details on the important role that antioxidants play in anti-aging and photoprotection. There has been a continuous improvement in sunscreen formulation over the past few decades, especially in the development of broader spectrum coverage sunscreens. In addition to the conventional organic-chemical and the physical-mineral type sunscreens, a number of non-sunscreen sun protective strategies have been investigated. These include anti-oxidant ingredients for topical application, topical DNA repair enzymes, botanical extracts for topical and systemic use, and oral supplements claimed to provide protection against sun exposure. This presentation will review the scientific evidence and the commercial claims for these non-conventional agents. The source of evidence will be noted, whether human clinical trials, epidemiological studies, animal studies or in vitro model systems.

Dr. Madfes will discuss the effects of retinoids and topical vitamins on the skin. During the past few years, the use of these ingredients has been incorporated into all aspects of skin care, becoming mainstream. It is important to know the individual properties of retinoids and topical vitamins as well as their increased benefits when used in combination.
