Brand Description

Founded in 2000 by Stanford-trained Dermatologists, Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, Rodan + Fields was envisioned to give people the best skin of their lives — and the confidence that comes with it. Our company was acquired in 2003 by the Estée Lauder Companies who placed the R+F skincare Regimens in department stores. In 2007, the founding doctors made the unprecedented move to leave retail stores and buy the company back. Believing that word-of-mouth is an authentic way to share information about our products, our doctors relaunched under the name Rodan + Fields in 2008 using a Consumer Connected Commerce business model. In 2022, Rodan + Fields launched into the haircare category – the best of your life starts at the root. Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields’ commitment to making the world better inspired them to found the Rodan + Fields Prescription for Change Foundation, which gives young people access to life-changing empowerment programs.

Sales: 1.5 Billion

Rodan+Fields isn’t showing its age—the company continues to garner accolades from beauty press. For example, Volume+ shampoo and conditioner won Cosmopolitan’s Holy Grail Beauty Award. The company entered the hair care category in 2022  with its “scalp-first” approach to deliver a transformative, clinically-tested result. In other award winning news, Essentials Face + Body Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 won the Good Housekeeping 2023 Best Beauty Award. In NPD news, R+F introduced Plumping Lip Oil SPF 28 in four shades. In a clinical study, 100% of participants said they had more hydrated lips; 78% had plumper/fuller-looking lips and 74% had a more defined lip border.

Sales rose less than 1% last year. Last year, Rodan+Fields launched Total RF Serum. It’s billed as a comprehensive skin care serum packed with powerhouse, high-potency ingredients that “fuel tired skin and slow the effects of aging,” said the company. The serum improves cell energy, elasticity, firmness, radiance and reduces the appearance of pores.

R+F agreed to $38 million to settle a class action lawsuit involving Lash Boost.

Key ingredients include RF TriEnergy Complex, a mix of proprietary ingredients inspired by Ayurvedic medicine combining sandalwood, Indian kino extract and omega 6 acids to minimize fine lines, energize skin, and provide building blocks for supple skin; patented RF3 Antioxidant Complex, which fortifies skin and protects against environmental aggressors; ceramides, which help strengthen the skin’s barrier and maintain moisture; and calcium which works to firm and tighten skin.

In April, R+F reached a settlement with plaintiffs who filed three class-action lawsuits. The plaintiffs alleged that the company didn’t disclose information about the potential risks of isopropyl cloprostenate, which may cause eye irritation and iris color change.

Under terms of the deal, R+F offered to pay $38 million to consumers who purchased Lash Boost between Oct. 1, 2016 and March 11, 2022. Consumers are eligible to receive up to $175 cash benefit, or a $250 credit voucher to be used on any R+F product. Claims must be submitted by Sept. 7. 2022.

Dimitri Haloulos replaced Diane Dietz as president and chief executive officer. Haloulos joined R+F in January 2020 as chief growth officer. Prior to that, he served as the CEO of BevMo! for four years, and led the transformation of the West Coast specialty beverage retailer. He has also held leadership positions with Procter & Gamble, Albertsons and Safeway. Haloulos has an MBA from Indiana University, a Bachelor of Science degree from West Point, and served as an officer in the US Army.

“Dimitri shares our vision of providing all people with a lifechanging opportunity and recognizes our Consultants’ success, is our success, and as we continue to grow we must provide them with a strong business opportunity,” said Dr. Kathy Fields, co-founder.

During her five years as CEO, Dietz helped Rodan + Fields claim the leading skin care position in North America and built a strong brand. Under her leadership, R+F has launched award-winning innovation, including Lash Boost and Active Hydration Serum, and began the company’s global expansion beyond North America.

“On behalf of our board of directors, Kathy and I want to thank Diane for her countless contributions,” said Dr. Katie Rodan, co-founder of Rodan + Fields. “We are excited to bring Dimitri on as our new leader. His track record of innovating companies and his passion for the direct selling channel made him the unanimous choice of the Board to be our next CEO.”

In May, during the Society for Investigative Dermatology’s virtual meeting, R+F presented research and technology for environmentally-induced skin damage and skin inflammation. One poster demonstrated that one particular permutation, a combination of three different molecules each targeting different biological mechanisms associated with mitigating the effects of reactive oxygen species, provided additional downstream benefits mitigating biomarkers associated with inflammaging, photoaging and hyperpigmentation caused by environmental oxidative stress. In another presentation, R+F evaluated a new botanical and vitamin E blend called RF Botanical Soothing Blend for its ability to mitigate intracellular reactive oxygen species in cultured human dermal fibroblasts generated by UV radiation and pollution, as well as downstream effects associated with propagation of the inflammatory cascade in skin cells generated by UVA.

Both technologies are leveraged in Rodan + Fields’ new Regimen.
