Sales rose nearly 9% last year. Spartan Chemical was named a Safer Choice Partner of the Year for 2023. Spartan Chemical Company is a recognized leader in cleaning and sanitation solutions for the industrial and institutional market. The company formulates and manufactures products from its facility in Maumee, OH and sells both domestically and internationally through a select network of distribution. Spartan’s products and services are used in building service contractor, education, food service and processing, health care, industrial, lodging/hospitality and vehicle care markets.
In 2021, the company made a big investment in human resources by expanding its regulatory and quality assurance teams, and adding safety personnel. In support of Spartan’s distribution channel, the company expanded the corporate account team to accommodate changes in purchasing behaviors across the industry.

In product news, Spartan introduced two disinfectant products using alternative active ingredients. Facilities, such as schools and healthcare settings, have established a preference for disinfectants featuring alternatives to quaternary ammonium compounds, the company said.

In 2020, the company focused on addressing the unprecedented demand for disinfectants, hand hygiene products and wipes. To date, Spartan has 25 products on the EPA List-N: disinfectants for use against SARS-CoV-2, including aerosol, ready-to-use, concentrated, and wipe products. In support of the janitorial and custodial workers in the field, Spartan produced five new training modules for their CleanCheck Learning Management System including pandemic disinfection training. With so much misinformation and uncertainty about the proper protocol for cleaning and disinfecting facilities, Spartan also established a Certified Disinfection Specialist accreditation program, which provides thorough instruction and knowledge verification for Spartan’s customers.
Spartan also introduced new functionality for CompuClean Facility Management Software. The new Work Logging feature allows custodial staff to log cleaning in real-time on any mobile device. With a simple, three click process, cleaning staff can select an area, select a service performed and save. Once saved, the system will log where the cleaning took place, who performed it, and what type of service was performed.

Spartan Chemical Company has been a leader in the formulation and manufacture of cleaning and sanitation solutions for the I&I market since 1956. The company is now revving its engines in car care. Why? There are more than 27,000 car washes in operation in the US that use janitorial items and vehicle wash chemicals. Car washes accounted for about eleven percent of commercial industrial and institutional (I&I) cleaning chemical demand in 2009 and demand for I&I cleaning chemicals in commercial car washes is expected to increase 5.6% annually.
For the sector, Spartan touts Xtreme Vehicle Care, a complete line of products developed to meet the needs of car wash facilities. Designed to provide the utmost flexibility for both distributors and car wash operators, Xtreme Vehicle Care products can be used in self-serve, full-serve conveyor, as well as in-bay automatic facilities. Leveraging the latest in technology for each of the Xtreme Vehicle Care products, this highly concentrated line is formulated to meet car was operators exacting standards.
“According to a survey that we conducted, many of our current distributor partners were already actively selling to car wash facilities,” said John Swigart, president, Spartan Chemical Company. “By adding a solution for car wash chemicals, now they can offer the same efficiency of logistics for the entire car wash operation.”
With Xtreme Vehicle Care, car wash owners and operators can count on providing a clean, dry vehicle every time, with a chemical line-up that simplifies the ordering process and adapts to the cleaning systems in their facility. The line includes 13 products spanning from Xtreme High pH Presoak that penetrates road film and grime, organic soils, petroleum based oils and particulate debris to Xtreme Weather Shield that provides long-lasting shine, gloss, weather resistancy and water repellency.

Spartan Chemical Company has been a leader in the formulation and manufacture of cleaning and sanitation solutions for the I&I market since 1956. One of the biggest news items at the company this year was its new grocery sanitation program, GroceryCheck.

“GroceryCheck was designed to make clean simple through a straight forward and comprehensive program that keeps customer safety and satisfaction at the forefront.”

Spartan Chemical Company has been a leader in the formulation and manufacture of cleaning and sanitation solutions for the I&I market since 1956. One of those markets is craft breweries. For this growing sector, Spartan offers the BrewCheck craft brewery sanitation program.
“When it comes to craft beer, it’s all about the flavor,” said John Swigart, president. “Sanitation is the first step in a great brew process. BrewCheck gives brewers a program that allows them to take control of their flavor profile.”

Sales rose 3% last year, according to company executives. With the US economy continuing to limp along at 2% growth, and with hospitality and food service struggling, successful I&I companies have had to look for new efficiencies. In 2012, Spartan did just that by adding two new high-speed filling lines that have contributed to operational functions, according to company executives. The laundry and ware wash lines introduced several years ago continue to gain market share. Several new products are expected to debut in January.

Privately-held Spartan operates its chemical specialty maintenance products firm from Maumee, OH.
Spartan’s most recent monthly distributor sales seminars have had a special focus on green cleaning and initiatives. The attendees learned about Spartan’s environmentally preferable products, their proper use and how these products will help their customers go green and support sustainability initiatives. In addition, Spartan’s Green Cleaning Specialist Certification Program features a hands-on training session where participants worked with Spartan’s product lines to learn proper cleaning procedures and best cleaning practices. At the end of the seminars, attendees earn the title of Spartan Green Cleaning Specialist.
In January, three more Spartan products completed the EPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) review process—Green Solutions Glass Cleaner, Green Solutions Carpet Cleaner and Green Solutions All Purpose Cleaner.
