Comments: At Spartan Chemical Company, the tagline is “we make clean simple.” The company is a recognized leader in cleaning and sanitation solutions for the industrial and institutional market. As a proud US employer, Spartan formulates and manufactures high quality products from its state-of-the-art facility in Maumee, OH and sells both domestically and internationally through a select network of distribution. Spartan’s products and services are used in building service contractor, education, food service and processing, health care, industrial, lodging/hospitality, and vehicle care markets.

In 2019 the company focused on promotion and placement of its foamyiQ hand hygiene system—and it looks like it paid off. foamyiQ won the ISSA Innovation Award in the dispenser category and is the result of years of analysis, customer feedback, and product engineering.

“When Spartan started working on foamyiQ, we wanted to produce something that was unique and innovative not just another hand hygiene system,” said Cali Sartor, vice president of marketing and advertising. “We employed an open innovation platform to solicit fresh concepts from outside the professional skin care industry. Then, we worked to take foamyiQ from a piece of paper, to prototype, and then to the award-winning product it is today.”

With its innovative design, facilities can stop spending time and money installing, repairing, and replacing broken soap dispensers. No refilling is needed. The innovative cartridge is the dispensing mechanism; when the foamyiQ cartridge is empty, users remove it from the support bracket, recycle it, and snap on a fresh, clean one.

Spartan Chemical Company, a recognized leader in cleaning and sanitation solutions for the industrial and institutional market, formulates and manufactures products in Maumee, OH and sells both domestically and internationally through a select distribution network. The company’s products and services are used in building service contractor, education, food service and processing, health care, industrial, lodging/hospitality and vehicle care markets.

In 2018 the company expanded its popular Xcelente line with two new products. Xcelente Multi-Purpose Cleaner is a convenient aerosol that provides spray and wipe cleanup for stains and spills as they occur. Safe for use on a variety of hard surfaces, Xcelente delivers a shiny, streak-free finish on any surface not harmed by water, including glass, said the company.

Airlift Xcelente Odor Eliminator features odor encapsulating technology that doesn’t just cover up odors, it traps and removes these odors from the air, according to Spartan. The long-lasting fresh lavender fragrance neutralizes even the strongest odors, making it the perfect solution to address smoke, cannabis, urine and other complex malodors.

“By implementing a cleaning program featuring common fragrance, facility managers can multiply their efforts and increase overall perceptions,” said John Swigart, president, Spartan Chemical Company. “Our popular Xcelente fragrance is now available in cleaning, disinfecting and odor eliminating products enabling our customers to provide a common scent experience throughout cleaning operations.”

Sales rose more than 10% last year and the company continues to be on a roll. Last month, it was awarded a Novation contract for laundry that was effective July 1. Founded in 1998, Novation is a leading health care supply chain expertise and contracting company for the more than 65,000 members of VHA Inc. and UHC, which are two national health care alliances, and Provista, LLC. In April, Spartan was approved as a Performance Partner with NSA, and in early November, the firm was awarded a 37-month contract with the Premier healthcare alliance for its housekeeping products. Premier is an alliance of more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals and 78,000-plus other healthcare sites.

Who says I&I firms can’t be hip? Spartan, for one, is showing the industrial and institutional market that it is techno-savvy. In early in 2012, the company expanded its Spartan’s CleanCheck Training System with the addition of the Health Care module that is available online, free of charge to all registered users. As with all other modules, CleanCheck Health Care offers videos, training cards, a training manual section, testing and certification, and training components are available in English and Spanish.

And, let’s not forget The Spartan App for the iPad. Geared to be used by the field sales teams of Spartan Authorized distributors, it can be used primarily as a proposal builder. The app features interactive floor plans for nine market segments, in which it creates an experience where the distributor sales representatives “walk through” a facility along with the facility service provider. The program recommends products for applications common to various market specific rooms and surfaces and is rich with product information, sell sheets and additional features.

Spartan Chemical Company celebrated its 55th anniversary on May 10. Founded by E.T. Swigart, Jr., its top leadership remains all in the family as Stephen H. Swigart is the firm’s president and chairman and John Swigart is executive vice president.

This I&I company employs more than 250 and has approximately 550 selectively appointed distributors located throughout the US. According to Spartan, the firm’s physical plant continues to evolve, with recent additions pushing it up to more than 577,000 sq.ft. of manufacturing facilities on a 133-acre site. And this year, Spartan will break ground on another expansion project, this one expected to add an additional 100,000 square feet.

Spartan has rolled out two new environmentally preferred laundry products—Clothesline Fresh Detergent EP 18 and Clothesline Fresh Softener EP 19. In addition, Spartan added the DfE label to Clothesline Fresh No Dye-No Fragrance Laundry Detergent 13. All three of these environmentally preferred laundry products are available in a case of four gallons, five-gallon pails, 15-gallon drums and 55-gallon drums.

Spartan says it is focused on continuing a leadership role within the sustainability movement too, making advancements in sustainable products, and adjustments in operations to reduce its carbon footprint. In 2010, several energy improvements were implemented, includinga lighting retrofit with occupancy sensors, a new air compressor system and a new tank wash water heater.
