Lehi, UT www.youngliving.com Sales: $600 million (estimated). Key Personnel: Donald Gary Young founder and chairman, Young Living; Mary Young, chief executive officer; Jared Turner, chief operating officer; Ben Riley, executive vice president, global sales; Dr. Michael Buch, chief science officer. Major Products: Essential oils. New Products: Life Matters wellness products (acquisition). Comments: Oh, to be young again! Donald Gary Young founded Young Living Essential Oils in 1993 and since then, the company has blossomed into a $1 billion business (retail), according to industry reports. The direct sales company has about two million distributors. At the company’s Young Living Farms north of Yuba State Park in Utah, Young Living encourages consumers to get in touch with the three elements that create balance in human life—Mother Earth, plants and animals, according to the company founder. “I didn’t want a plastic cement pavement facility,” noted Young. “I wanted moms and dads to come and really touch the plants and feel the dirt and embody the whole experience farm.” It’s all part of Young Living’s “seed to seal” process that is said to ensure that all products are genuine, free of synthetic chemicals and pure. Farm life may be great, but it’s not enough to keep Essential Living from breaking ground for new headquarters in Lehi, UT. The 263,000 square-foot building on more than 27 acres was designed to complement Young Living’s philosophy of living harmoniously with nature, according to the company. The flowing, organic design enhances a sense of community, connectivity, and communication, with a focus on green initiatives throughout the indoor and outdoor designs. The five-story building offers work space for nearly 1,000 employees and includes more than three acres of demonstration gardens. In May, Young Living Essential Oils acquired Life Matters, a direct seller of wellness products. A purchase price for the all-cash deal was not disclosed.
