Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Recalled by Edgewell

An internal review found that some samples of the product contained trace levels of benzene.

Edgewell Personal Care Company on Saturday issued a voluntary nationwide recall of three batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 to the consumer level.

Edgewell has notified its retailers to remove any remaining recalled product from shelves. Consumers should stop using the affected product immediately and appropriately discard.

According to a statement issued on the company’s website, an internal review found that some samples of the product contained trace levels of benzene. While benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat products, the review showed that unexpected levels of benzene arose from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can. Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen.

Trace levels of benzene have been found in several spray format products, including sunscreens, deodorants and foot sprays, over the past year

Last November, Footcare brand Odor-Eaters, which is owned by Blistex Inc., voluntarily recalled a total of 41 lots of two Odor-Eaters spray products to the consumer level due to the presence of benzene. Internal testing identified low levels of benzene contamination in specific lots of these aerosol products, according to the company.

This past February, HRB Brands voluntarily recalled specific lots of Sure and Brut aerosol sprays to the consumer level due to the presence of benzene.

Banana Boat will offer reimbursement for consumers who have purchased a product marked with lot codes 20016AF, 20084BF and 21139AF located on the bottom of the can.

No other batches of Hair & Scalp or Banana Boat products are in the scope of this recall and may continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended.
